DANAO CITY, Cebu — Around 300 campus journalists and coaches from Toledo City Division joined student delegates from across Region VII – Central Visayas during the opening of the 2026 Regional Schools Press Conference on March 4, 2026.
The opening started with a parade through Danao City streets, concluding at Cebu Technological University – Danao Campus. Delegates from various school divisions, accompanied by their coaches and education officials, marched in formation, showcasing the region’s budding journalistic talent.
Dr. Roseller N. Gelig, Schools Division Superintendent of Danao City, welcomed the delegates, recognizing the efforts of both students and coaches.
The superintendent explained that the conference aims to enhance students’ writing, reporting, and broadcasting skills while promoting ethical and responsible journalism.
Cebu Province extended its support through a message from Governor Pamela S. Baricuatro, delivered by Provincial Information Office Head Ainjeliz de la Torre-Orong. The governor emphasized the important role of campus journalism in shaping responsible, courageous, and informed young leaders.
“Campus journalism teaches discipline, responsibility, and the courage to speak the truth,” Gov. Baricuatro said. “It equips you to become voices of fairness, accountability, and integrity in your communities.”
Meanwhile, Danao City Mayor Ramon “Nito” Durano III, alongside Vice Mayor Ivy Durano and city officials, expressed full support for the event, highlighting the city’s commitment to nurturing student talent in journalism.
The program was made livelier by cultural performances and dancesport numbers of young learners from Danao City. Banners representing the participating school divisions were raised, and the recitation of the Journalist’s Creed highlighted the students’ dedication to responsible campus journalism.
The RSPC features competitions in news writing, editorial writing, feature writing, sports writing, broadcasting, and other categories. The event, organized by the Department of Education Region VII, ran from March 2 to 7 and served as the regional qualifying stage for the National Schools Press Conference.
The program concluded with dance presentations and a colorful fireworks display.
